The EV Chargepoint Grant currently covers 75% of the cost of a home charger, up to £500, but it’s been restricted to renters, flat owner-occupiers and leaseholders, and landlords installing for tenants since 2022 (the £500 cap itself is an April 2026 increase from £350). Homeowners in a standard house are no longer eligible. We’ll confirm what, if anything, applies to your situation as part of your quote.
Which cable style suits you?
Tethered units come with the cable fixed to the unit, so it’s there ready whenever you park up. Untethered units give you a plain socket and you supply your own cable. Neither one charges any faster than the other, it’s really a question of look versus convenience, and whether more than one car in the household might need to use the point.
7kW is the near-universal home charging speed in the UK, which works out to about 25–30 miles of range added per hour on charge. A 60kWh battery charging from flat takes roughly 8–10 hours at that rate, which is exactly why overnight charging is the norm rather than anyone standing around waiting.

Can I charge an EV from my solar panels?
Yes. With the right charger and inverter combination, your car can draw from your own generation first. A lot of smart chargers can even be configured to only pull from surplus solar rather than the grid, so it tops up automatically whenever the panels are outproducing the house.
Do I need a separate consumer unit or circuit?
A dedicated circuit running back to your consumer unit is part of the standard installation. If there’s not enough spare capacity there already, we’ll tell you and price in whatever extra work that needs.
Can I install a charger without off-street parking?
You just need a safe route for the cable between your house and the car that doesn’t cross a public footpath. The survey confirms exactly what that looks like for your property.
